The four formulas explained.

Robinson Formula (1983)

♂ Robinson = 52 + 1.9 × (height in inches − 60)
♀ Robinson = 49 + 1.7 × (height in inches − 60)

Developed from data on large populations. Generally considered more conservative.

Miller Formula (1983)

♂ Miller = 56.2 + 1.41 × (height in inches − 60)
♀ Miller = 53.1 + 1.36 × (height in inches − 60)

Developed alongside Robinson in the same year. Tends to produce slightly higher estimates.

Devine Formula (1974)

♂ Devine = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
♀ Devine = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

Originally created by Dr B.J. Devine for drug dosage calculations in clinical settings.

BMI-based (midpoint of healthy range)

♂ Healthy midpoint = 21.5 × height(m)²
♀ Healthy midpoint = 21.5 × height(m)²

Uses the midpoint of the WHO healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9 → midpoint 21.7). Directly tied to BMI classification.
